Bandwidth and monthly traffic calculator
Enter your monthly page views, downloads and API calls with their average size. You get the monthly transfer, what still reaches your server after a CDN, and the average and peak bit rate its network port needs.

Assumptions
Every number the result uses that you didn't enter. Change any of them to match your case.
- Assumption%
TCP/IP and TLS headers, HTTP headers, handshakes and retransmissions on top of the content itself.
No source: this is our own assumption. Change it if you know your case. - Assumptionhours/month
The month cloud providers bill by: 8,760 hours a year divided by 12.
No source: this is our own assumption. Change it if you know your case. - Assumption
Traffic is not spread evenly: the busiest hour of a typical day runs at about three times the monthly average.

The link holds the settings after #, which browsers never send to a server.
What it does
It adds up what your site or service sends in a month (pages, file downloads and API responses), adds protocol overhead, takes out what a CDN serves, and turns the rest into the average and peak bit rate at your server. Use it to check a plan's traffic allowance and its port speed.
How it works
- Payload: page views × page size + downloads × file size + API calls × response size. Sizes are decimal: 1 MB = 1,000,000 bytes, 1 TB = 10¹² bytes, the way providers state traffic allowances.
- Transfer: the payload plus protocol overhead (TCP/IP, TLS and HTTP headers, retransmissions). At the server: the transfer minus the share the CDN serves from its cache.
- Average bandwidth: the server's monthly transfer × 8 bits, divided by the seconds in a month (730 hours by default). 1 Mbps = 1,000,000 bit/s.
- Peak bandwidth: the average × the peak-to-average ratio, because traffic comes in busy hours, not evenly.
- The overhead, the month and the peak ratio are listed under Assumptions with why we chose them; none has a published source, so each one carries the Assumption mark.
Example
1,000,000 page views a month at 2.5 MB each, no downloads, no API calls and no CDN, with every assumption at its default:
1,000,000 views · 2.5 MB · no CDN
- Monthly transfer
- 2.625 TB/month
- At your server (after the CDN)
- 2.625 TB/month
- Average bandwidth at the server
- 8 Mbps
- Peak bandwidth at the server
- 24 Mbps
Limits
- Every view is counted in full. Repeat visitors load less, because their browser keeps files in its cache; enter a smaller page size if you know your cache hit ratio.
- Outbound only. Uploads to your server (inbound) are usually free and are not counted.
- The peak is an average busy hour. A launch, a link from a large site or an attack can be many times higher.
- No price. What the traffic costs depends on the provider's allowance and its price per GB or TB over it.
