How to choose a VPS

A VPS is a virtual machine you rent and run for as long as you need it. Before comparing providers, work out what the machine has to do; most of the choice follows from that.

What we are building

Persistent machines are the first thing ANAROQ is building: machines you keep, under the same limits, cost view and audit trail as everything else, whichever capacity runs them.

The design is held to the principles on the overview page. Plans, sizes and launch dates are not decided, so this page names none.

How to choose

What to check before you commit, and which tool on this site answers each question.

  1. Size it from the workload

Start from the apps you will run and how many people use them, not from a plan name. Memory usually runs out before CPU, and disk grows with data and logs.

    Tool: Stack Sizer

  2. Check first-boot setup

See whether the provider accepts cloud-init user data, so the machine starts with your user, SSH keys, firewall and updates already set.

Tool: cloud-init Generator for Ubuntu 24.04

  3. Plan how the apps will run

Write down the containers, volumes and secrets before you start, so the server can be rebuilt from files rather than from memory.

    Tool: Docker Compose Generator

  4. Check what it exposes

Before anything goes live, look for ports published on every interface, containers with more privilege than they need, and images without a pinned version.

    Tool: Docker Compose Analyzer

  5. Know how you restore

Ask whether snapshots and backups are included, where copies are kept, and how a restore works. A backup you have never restored is a hope, not a plan.

No tool for this step: ask the provider and read their terms.

  6. Know how you leave

Check that you can export your disks and data, and expect the IP address to change when you move. Keep DNS and configuration in files you control.

No tool for this step: ask the provider and read their terms.

What this page does not cover

This guide does not compare providers or list prices. Any later comparison follows the site's neutrality policy: published method, a source and a date for every figure, and ANAROQ never ranked while it has nothing available.
